TOPIC: LOT
Text: Genesis:19.17-20
17. So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed." 18.Then Lot said to them, "Please, no, my lords! 19 "Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. 20 "See now, this city [is] near [enough] to flee to, and it [is] a little one; please let me escape there ([is] it not a little one?) and my soul shall live."
Message
Lot was the grandson of Terah, son of Haran, and nephew of Abraham. When carefully studying the life of Lot, despite the fact that he is a man that knows God, his physical location eventually contributed to his failure as a man and as a father to his family. The bible recorded in Genesis chapter 17 that Lot resides in Sodom, a town filled with all kinds of perversion, a perversion so filthy that God had to destroy the cities.
God sent his angles to destroy the city and luckily for Lot, God decided to have mercy on him and his household. The angels told Lot their plan, even entreated him to go out and save his son in laws. The angels were specific about where he should flee to. They told him the mountains was safe but he chose what he feel is less stressful and very small. What looks small today can be harmful to your future. Just like Lot, some Christians negotiate with God on where to go. They choose Zoar, a little city that looks safe, and not to far from Sodom. It was at Zoar that Lot’s wife look back to Sodom and was turned into a pillar of salt. Eventually, he also saw that the little town doesn’t have friendly residents, so he came fearful and eventually flee to a cave on the mountain (Gen 19:30). Unfortunately, he has lost his wife then.
Beloved, are you also like Lot? Always negotiating with God what you should do for Him? Where you think is safe for you? God told Jonah to go in one direction but he stubbornly went in another direction.
Prayer: Lord, help me to trust your decisions for my life. I follow your leadings without questioning. Amen
