Topic: Humility
Text:Luke 18:10-14
{10}Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. {11}The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. {12}I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
{13}“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
{14}“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Message
To be humble means to recognise we are not self-sufficient, rather that we depend on God for all we need. All we have comes from him: our lives, our salvation, our hope, our strength and abilities, everything is given by God and nothing is our own.
It is worrisome seeing how some people display subtle arrogance and pride before the lord of heaven and earth who is the epitome of beauty in Humility. Being a Christian is all about following Jesus, the one who laid down his life for us. It is all about knowing him, trusting and obeying him, and becoming like him. We need to understand the humility of Jesus. He said:
Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble at heart, and you will find rest for your souls(matt 11:28)
Some are even so proud that they cannot participate in fellowship where a younger believer is leading..(this is sheer spiritual arrogance).the tax collector could not lift up his eye to God because he was aware of his limitations whereas the pharisee felt too righteous and familiar with God. Pride goes before destruction, humble yourself before God for he resists the Proud
PrayerPoint
My Father and my God, give me the grace to demonstrate sincere humility like your son Jesus Christ who left His glory above to die for my salvation. Amen
