TEXT: Luke 4:4

Jesus answered him, saying “It is written”

MESSAGE

As preparation for his ministry, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the wilderness. Satan tempted him physically, emotionally and spiritually. Jesus used the scripture to counter Satan’s attacks. This is what is expected of you too.

Memorizing the scripture is an effective tool for spiritual growth and a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. We need to have God’s word hidden in our hearts so we can avoid sin (Ps 119:11). When we are in the middle of trial or temptation, it is not always convenient to run for our Bible and start search for a specific passage. But it is not enough to be able to recite the Bible passages.

You must have faith in God’s Word. To use the scripture effectively, you have to study and meditate on it and depend on the Spirit of God to teach you. Satan also knows the scripture and can twist it to suit his purpose. Let your ‘sword’ be sharp by obeying the scripture daily. Then when the devil tempts you sin, you can follow Jesus example and remind satan of what is written.
